Zizia aptera

Height: 1-2 ft
Spread: 1 ft
Bloom Time: April-May
Sunlight: Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Dry, Very Dry
Life Cycle: Perennial

Named for its heart-shaped foliage, this species has large, thick leaves that grow mainly towards the base of the plant. These leaves have a rubbery texture and are used as a host plant for Black Swallowtail butterflies. In April and May, the flowering stalks of Heart-leaf Golden Alexander emerge, rising up with yellow flowers that bloom in umbels. This species prefers part shade and dry, well-drained soil. Small insects visit the blooms. Deer Resistant.
