Appalachian Meadow Rue is a member of the Buttercup family that grows 3-4 feet tall and has green/yellow flowers that bloom in clusters in May and June. Male and female flowers are borne of separate plants. Its roundish leaves have a distinctive waxy feel and are used as a host plant for several types of native caterpillars, including Crocus Geometer and Canadian Owlet moths. Appalachian Meadow Rue is a shade-loving, mountainous species in our area and grows in soils that are nutrient rich.
