Wavy-leaved Aster flowers late in the year after most other species are done blooming. Its large flowers are light purple and around 1 inch wide. Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of this species, compared to other asters, is the way its heart-shaped leaves clasp the stem. Its natural habitats include well-drained woods and clearings. Though it can grow in full sun in dry areas, it most often occurs in areas of partial shade and in dappled sunlight in woodland settings. Over 100 caterpillars use aster species as a host plant, some of these depending on Wavy-leaved Aster. This provides huge benefits for butterfly and moth populations, as well as birds and other wildlife that use caterpillars as a food source.
