Purple-stemmed Asters are a fall-blooming perennial of wet sites. Their large 1 to 1½ inch wide flowers are light purple. The stems of this species are often also purplish, with clasping leaves. Purple-stemmed Asters bloom at the time when Monarch butterflies are making their famous migration south, and they seem to be a particularly preferred nectar source for these butterflies.
