Hairy Skullcap
Scutellaria elliptica Height: 1-2 ft Spread: 1 ft Bloom Time: June Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade Soil Moisture: Medium, Dry, Very Dry Life Cycle: Perennial A member of the mint family, Hairy Skullcap has light purple flowers that are tinged with white. These blooms appear in June and flower in spiked groups that open from the bottom upwards. This species sometimes is naturally found in open areas, but more often it occurs in areas with partial shade. It can grow along woodland edges and in the scattered light of forests. It prefers well-drained soil and can even grow in very dry locations. Skullcap species are used as a host plant for the small Skullcap Skeletonizer Moth. Although its name sounds intimidating, these small native copper-colored moths are only 9-11 mm wide and inconspicuous. Their larvae fold up parts of leaves and feed inside. Deer Resistant. |
