Common Dewberry is a trailing, woody species that creeps along the soil to form a groundcover. In April and May, showy white flowers appear. These flowers have 5 petals and are pollinated by bees. These later turn to dark purple/black berries that are up to 1 inch wide. A variety of different animals from turtles to foxes eat these fruits. Each leaf consists of 3 to 5 leaflets. Common Dewberry thrives in a variety of different soil moistures and grows well on sites with both wet and very dry soil.
