Long-leaf Ground Cherry
Physalis longifolia var. subglabrata

Height: 2-4 ft
Spread: 1-2 ft
Bloom Time: June-August
Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Medium, Dry
Life Cycle: Perennial

In summer, Long-leaf Ground Cherry produces a hanging yellow flower that blooms below the plant's leaves and stems. These yellow, bell-like flowers have a characteristic dark purple center and attract short-tongued bees that help with pollination. After successful pollination, a yellow tomato-like berry forms within a lantern-like husk. These ripe fruits are used by a variety of native wildlife, including Eastern Box Turtles, Wild Turkeys, and some fruit-eating mammals. Another common name for this species is Wild Tomatillo. Deer Resistant.
