Winterberry
Ilex verticillata

Height: 6-10 ft
Spread: 6-10 ft
Bloom Time: April-May
Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Wet, Moist

Winterberry is a large shrub growing 6 to 10 feet tall and has conspicuous bright red berries that form where the leaves join the stem. These berries mature in September to November. Small white flowers bloom earlier in the year. As a holly, this species has male and female flowers on separate plants, and both genders are needed to produce berries. Winterberry typically grows in wet soil in swamps and around ponds and does well in partially shaded locations. A large variety of songbirds use the berries, and its foliage hosts a variety of native caterpillars.
