Its smooth, large leaves grow in pairs along the sturdy stems and taper at their points. This upright perennial prefers clearings and woodland edges and can also thrive in forested sites that receive some partial light throughout the day. It often grows in dry, rocky soils in upland areas, providing its common name. The nectar is used by a large diversity of pollinators. Upland Boneset is most common in areas with nutrient rich soil.
