American Persimmon
Diospyros virginiana Height: 35-60 ft Spread: 25-35 ft Bloom Time: May-June Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade Soil Moisture: Wet, Moist, Medium, Dry, Very Dry Small to mid-sized trees with dark colored bark, American Persimmons typically grow 35 to 60 feet tall. Their yellow/green flowers are bell-shaped, blooming in May-June, and are pollinated by long-tongued bees. This species is usually, but not always, dioecious with male and female flowers on separate trees. Male trees aid in pollination while female trees produce round orange fruits in fall. This fruit is used by foxes, raccoons, opossums, and many bird species. The leaves of American Persimmon are used as a host plant for various species of moths, including both the Luna Moth and Regal Moth. American Persimmons thrive in a wide variety of soil moistures and do well in both wet and very dry locations. |
