Sensitive Partridge Pea
Chamaecrista nictitans var. nictitans

Height: 1 ft
Spread: 1 ft
Bloom Time: June-October
Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Dry, Very Dry
Life Cycle: Annual

Sensitive Partridge Pea is a short annual that grows around 1 foot tall and has yellow pea-like flowers that bloom in June through September. Along with the brightly colored blooms, this species also has extrafloral nectaries that are used by native insects. The feathery-looking leaves will sometimes close up upon being touched. As an annual, Sensitive Partridge Pea completes its life cycle in one year and produces abundant seeds. Because of these many seeds, it is able to continually persist once introduced into a habitat corridor. Sensitive Partridge Peas are a host plant for caterpillars of Little Yellow Sulphurs, Cloudless Sulphurs, and Sleepy Orange butterflies. Birds, including Eastern Meadowlarks, feed upon the seeds. Deer Resistant.
