False Nettle
Boehmeria cylindrica

Height: 2-3 ft
Spread: 2 ft
Bloom Time: July-August
Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade
Soil Moisture: Wet, Moist
Life Cycle: Perennial

False Nettle grows 2 to 3 feet tall and has a bushy structure. In summer, spikes of inconspicuous yellow/green flowers appear close to the plant's central stems. A host plant for several butterfly species in our area: Red Admirals, Eastern Commas, and Question Mark butterflies. The caterpillars of these butterflies depend on the toothed leaves of False Nettle to complete their life cycle. While related to other nettles, False Nettle is harmless and lacks stinging hairs. Wildlife will also use its bushy structure for shelter. False Nettle occurs in a variety of moist and wet sites, from low fields and ditches to moist, wooded areas.
