​Often growing as a small understory tree in areas of partial shade, Paw Paw typically grows around 15 to 20 feet tall and has large leaves that point downward. Its 1½ to 2'' wide maroon flowers bloom in spring and are followed by 3-6'' oblong fruit that ripens to yellow. Over years, Paw Paws form colonies. Zebra Swallowtail caterpillars use this species as a host plant and are rarely seen far away from patches of Paw Paws. Paw Paws most often grow in areas with moist soil in floodplains and along creeks. Deer Resistant.
