Butterflyweed
Asclepias tuberosa var. tuberosa Height: 1-2 ft Spread: 1-2 ft Bloom Time: May-August Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade Soil Moisture: Dry, Very Dry Life Cycle: Perennial Butterflyweed is a short, non-aggressive milkweed that naturally occurs in dry, well-drained areas throughout Virginia. The bright orange flowers of this species are arranged in clusters at the top of the plants and are often visited by butterflies and other pollinators. Later, characteristic milkweed seedpods form with fluff. Two equally important native species that use the long, narrow leaves of Butterflyweed to raise their young are Milkweed Tussock Moths and Monarch Butterflies. Interestingly, the Tussock caterpillars often eat older leaves while Monarchs prefer young growth, and the two species can coexist well in the same milkweed patch. Deer Resistant. |
