Silvery Bluestem
Andropogon ternarius var. ternarius Height: 3-4 ft Spread: 1-2 ft Warm Season, Blooms September-October Sunlight: Full Sun to Part Shade Soil Moisture: Medium, Dry, Very Dry Life Cycle: Perennial Silvery Bluestem is a warm season grass that grows 3-4 feet tall. The notable white flowering parts/seed heads of this clump-forming species appear in September and October. Its bushy upright habit keeps its structure throughout the winter when the grass turns a golden color. Native wildlife depend on the habit of native grasses, like Silvery Bluestem, to be bunch-forming. Non-native grasses, such as fescue, are often too thick, and wildlife cannot live in or use them. Species like Bobwhites that depend on native grasses have been in sharp decline because of this loss of habitat. Deer Resistant. |
