This small tree grows around 15 to 25 feet tall and has large leaves. It prefers growing in the understory of the forest, thriving in part shade or dappled light. When young, it has notable white and green striped bark. The yellow/green flowers appear in May and June and are bell-like, hanging in clusters beneath the leaves. This species grows in the mountain areas of Virginia and sometimes also goes by the common names of Moosewood and Goosefoot Maple.​
